Welcome to Galileo Teacher Training Program Academy

The Galileo Teacher Training Program (GTTP) is a living legacy of the International Year of Astronomy 2009. The year celebrated the discoveries of Galileo Galilei that forever changed our understanding of our Universe. In spite of its importance and impact in our lives, Astronomy still remains as a marginal topic in school curricula and educators worldwide lack essential knowledge about tools and resources available for sharing this fundamental block of our culture.

Astronomy proves to be an excellent topic to engage formal and informal education communities in the excitement of science and its impact and applications in our daily lives. It is a field of expertise where the data analyzed by researchers is freely available on the internet and can and should be used to improve teaching of science in classrooms around the world. However, experienced educators and outreach specialists identify a critical impediment: many teachers lack the training to understand theseresources or use them effectively in their curricula.

Empower teachers to the use of real research in classroom and inviting them to embark on a unique global effort is the main objective of the GTTP movement. The GTTP Academy's vision is to create a network of educators involved in the effective use and transfer of astronomy education tools and resources into classroom science curricula. This capacity building effort aims to sparkle students enthusiasm for science and to enhance their awareness of what is science and how it works.

Making use of the power of online communities and the richness of Open Education Resources (OER) the proposal offered by the GTTP Academy has as a mission of supporting educators all over the world and providing all necessary help and sharing existing expertise for the effective construction of localized and well adapted teaching and learning experiences.

The training offer will range from web2.0 skills to real science in the hands of schools students. Through workshops, online training tools and basic education kits, the products and techniques developed by this training academy can be adapted to reach locations with few resources of their own, as well as computer-connected areas that can take advantage of access to robotic optical and radio telescopes, webcams, astronomy exercises, cross-disciplinary resources, image processing and digital universes (web and desktop planetariums).

Teachers enrolling in the GTTP Academy will have the opportunity to become "Galileo Ambassador" (a title recognized by the IAU and UNESCO/IYA2009), and therefore equipped to train other teachers in these methodologies, leveraging the work begun during the training in their classroom and in classrooms everywhere.
